Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum
The Museum is situated opposite the Chongqing People's Hall. It is not only the largest monographic museum, but is also a public undertaking for the preservation, education, scientific research in respect of cultural relics and the natural environment of Chongqing and the Three Gorges area. The exhibition hall covers an area of 23,000 square meters. The museum has a collection of more than 170,000 items.
The exterior of the museum has cambered walls and vitreous dome, representing the historical culture of Three Gorges project and its origins. In addition, there are large-scale reliefs, bronze sculptures and an 'Ecological Corridor' that is one kilometer in length (about 1,094 yards).
Permanent exhibition consists of four basic displays, six special exhibitions, a 360-degree film, a semi-panorama display visitor center and 3 temporary exhibition halls.
Four basic displays include:
Splendid Three Gorges: A great number of documents and relics show the history, culture and humanistic spirits in Three Gorges area.
Ancient Chongqing: It mostly displays the relics in Stone and Bronze Age. The ancient civilization in Chongqing can be dated back to 3,000 year ago.
Chongqing-Road to Urbanization: The relics and document on display reflect the opportunity and development Chongqing has faced with in 20th Century. It includes city changes, shaping of business and commercial center, and industry development. Events and figure which played an important role in the development of Chongqing are listed. It is the showcase of real Chongqing.
Hard times in Anti-Japanese War: The documents and relics on display reflect the contributions Chongqing and its people made for the peace of human being during China's war of resistance against Japan and World anti-fascist war.
Six Special Exhibitions:
Cultural Relics Exhibition donated by Mr. Li Chuli: The exhibition includes a variety of cultural relics donated by late distinguished collector- Mr. Li Chuli.
Ancient Chinese calligraphy and painting Exhibition: more than 100 works are chosen out of 10,000 works from Southern song Dynasty to Republic of China, 170 plus works are graded as first class culture relics.
Ancient Ceramics Exhibition: more than 200 pieces are chosen from a collection of 8,000 ceramics in all ages.
Exhibition of Chinese Currency in all ages: The currency on display ranges from shell money in ancient times to RMB in modern times.
Southwestern Folk Custom Exhibition: The exhibition mainly consists of daily necessity and handicrafts for southwestern ethnic groups.
Three Gorges Circular-screen film: The film will tell you about the scenery and life in Three Gorges area before Three Gorges Dam Project is completed. It is the permanent memory for old Three Gorges. The film will be played intermittently.
Chongqing Bombing Semi-panorama Display: The display combines modern techniques; sculpture and oil painting to reflect the historic event of Chongqing Bombing. Audience will relive the scene and feel how cruel the bombing is. After viewing the display, people will realize how important peace and life are!
Three temporary exhibition halls: The halls are used for the exhibitions for culture interaction domestically and internationally. Special and theme exhibitions will be held on important Memorial Day, festival and celebrations.
