Why Visit Qingdao

qingdao_4.jpg

Qingdao's character is the result of a unique heritage blending a former German colony (1898-1914) and a Chinese seaside city. One of the city's most distinctive aspects is its colonial-German architecture, which is found throughout the area known as Badaguan, or "Eight Passes," and the older town. Badaguan is reminiscent of the romantic European places we're used to exploring. We adore meandering the peaceful streets of Badaguan, every villa exuding its own history, from Renaissance to Bavarian, some of which are now art museums or upscale boutiques housed in former Bavarian village homes. Drawing on our explorations, we recommend visiting the Eight Passes area by bicycle.

In addition to the historical heritage, the interesting fact about Qingdao is that it has always been a 'Sea' City. This becomes clear with the presence of the symbolically famous Zhan Bridge stretching into the Yellow Sea, providing some amazing views of the skyline and islands from a distance. We also enjoy the sunset view from Zhan Bridge, as that represents the 'Qingdao' skyline photo, the golden view putting an 'extraordinary glow' on the sea, as well as some bright 'red roofs' on some neighboring buildings. For a fun experience on the seaside, one should visit the 'Shilaoren Beach' or 'Old Man Stone Beach'.

Qingdao is also globally famous for Tsingtao Beer, first brewed by Germans in 1903 using local spring water. A must-visit for beer enthusiasts, the Tsingtao Brewery offers tours tracing the history and production process of its beer, ending with a cold pint freshly poured in the on-site tavern. Beyond beer, Qingdao has evolved into a modern hub: it hosted the 2008 Olympic Sailing Regatta, boasts a thriving fashion scene, and hosts the annual Qingdao International Film Festival, drawing filmmakers and celebrities from around the world.

An excursion to Laoshan Mountain, the Taoist holy place, which stands about an hour outside the city centre, is an essential part of any visit to Qingdao. While the mountain boasts misty peaks, waterfalls and ancient Taoist temples, its trails offer the chance to wander through evergreen forests with the peaceful contrast of the blue ocean spread out before you.

Practical Overview

Qingdao's diverse attractions require a little planning to fully enjoy. We recommend 3–4 days to experience the best of the city: 2 days for urban sights and beaches, 1 day for Laoshan, and 1 day for leisurely exploration or a day trip to nearby attractions like Penglai Pavilion.

Getting to and Around Qingdao

Qingdao can be reached through modern means of transportation:

By Air: Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO) has many flights both domestically and internationally. From the airport, you can reach the city center by taking the Metro Line 8 (50 minutes, ¥7) or the shuttle bus (1 hour, ¥20). If you want to go faster, you can ride a taxi or Didi (¥150-200, 40 minutes).

By High-Speed Rail: Qingdao North Railway Station and Qingdao Railway Station are connected to other major cities such as Beijing (4.5 hours, ¥320), Shanghai (6 hours, ¥400), and Jinan (1.5 hours, ¥80). Both stations are linked to the metro, making it very convenient to get to your hotel.

Locally in Qingdao, the subway network (including Lines 1, 2, 3, 8, etc.) connects all major sights: Old Town through to Shilaoren Beach. Prices are reasonable (¥2-6), and the subway spares you from notorious road congestion in the city. Taxis or Didi are easily available for shorter journeys, at an initial price of ¥10. Bicycles for shared or rent are ideal for traversing the Badaguan section and the promenade.

Eating in Qingdao

Qingdao's cuisine is a love letter to the sea, with fresh seafood taking center stage. Must-try dishes include:

Braised Sea Cucumber: A local delicacy, tender sea cucumber simmered in a savory sauce.

Sautéed Prawns with Scallions: Fresh prawns cooked with local green onions, highlighting their natural sweetness.

Beer-Braised Pork Ribs: A Qingdao specialty, ribs braised in Tsingtao Beer for a rich, malty flavor.

For an authentic experience, head to Taidong Food Street or the seafood markets near Zhan Bridge, where you can pick fresh seafood and have it cooked on-site. Pair your meal with a cold Tsingtao Beer, preferably draft, for the freshest taste. We also recommend trying beer ice cream, a local twist that blends the beer's bitterness with sweet cream.

Shopping in Qingdao

Qingdao's commercial landscape combines traditional handicrafts and modern shopping malls:

Local Specialties: Look for Qingdao pearls, delicate shell carvings, and unique Tsingtao Beer-themed memorabilia like mugs or soaps.

Modern Malls: International brands are concentrated in shopping centers like MixC Qingdao and Sunac Mall.

Traditional Streets: For a more cultural experience, explore the Old Town Pedestrian Street, brimming with shops selling tea, calligraphy supplies, and local snacks. Polite bargaining is acceptable here.

Entertainment & Festivals

Qingdao's entertainment sector, such as the city's geography, is very diverse:

Qingdao International Beer Festival (late July to mid-August): This is the biggest festival in Qingdao, where a large number of people attend exclusively for the beer festival, which includes seafood banquets, music, and beer stalls. Quite a packed festival, so it will be wise to pre-book your accommodations if your visit will be during this time.

Coastal Promenade: This is a 40 km pathway for enjoying the views of the sea. You can take evening walks, jog, and even ride your bicycle there. Several parks and observation decks are available where you can halt to experience the views of the sea.

Live Music Bars: The clubs around May Fourth Square, as well as the Old Town, have a great sound of live music as well as Draft Tsingtao Beer.

Essential Travel Tips

Best Seasons to Visit: Spring in the months of April through June and autumn during September-October are ideal, with mild temperatures ranging between 15-25°C and fewer crowds. Summer is the peak beach season, although hot (between 25-30°C) and crowded. Winter, during November to March, is cold but quiet, with occasional snow adding to the charm in colonial architecture.

Beach Tips: Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and water shoes, as some beaches have rocks. Swim only in the areas where this is allowed because the sea can have strong currents.

Language & Connectivity: Basic English is spoken at hotels and tourist sites, but carry a translation app for small shops. Wi-Fi is available almost everywhere, and local eSIMs are fairly easy to get upon arrival at the airport.

Luggage Storage: Left-luggage services (¥10–20/day) are available at major train stations and airports for early-arriving or late-departing visitors.
