Tartar Mosque is located at the southern end of South Jiefang Road. It is also known as the Yanghang Mosque. Covering an area of 3000 square meters(0.74 acre),it was built by the local Tartar people in 1897 entirely from donations. The magnificent mosque is unique in its use of traditional Tartar architecture. It features geometric carvings in wood and brick and an octagonal dome adorned with a crescent. The mosque is a main center for worship in Urumqi and it can accommodate up to 1000 people in its prayer hall. As expected, the decor is elaborate with exquisite porches, carvings, and paintings all throughout. The mosque is open to tourists, including women; however you must gain approval to enter the mosque.

Some Mosque Rules for Visitors:

1. Do not shake hands or touch the heads of the clerics.
2. Keep your voice to a minimal level.
