Planning your trip to Luoyang? Understanding your transportation options is essential for exploring this historic city efficiently. As travel consultants at CET who've organized hundreds of Luoyang tours, we're sharing our insider knowledge to help you navigate the ancient capital with confidence.

Luoyang Airport: Flights & Ground Transportation

Luoyang Beijiao Airport (LYA).jpg

Luoyang Beijiao Airport (LYA) serves both domestic and limited international routes. The airport is located approximately 10 kilometers north of downtown Luoyang, making it easily accessible.

Current Flight Connections (2024):

Direct flights from major cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou:

Airlines:: China Southern, China Eastern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines

International connections:: Limited seasonal routes to Bangkok and Seoul

Ground Transportation from Airport:

Airport Shuttle Bus: ¥25 per person, runs every 30-40 minutes from 6:00 AM to final flight arrival. Stops at major hotels and Luoyang Railway Station

Taxi/Didi: ¥40-60 to city center (20-30 minutes). We recommend using Didi (China's Uber) for transparent pricing

Hotel Transfers: Many hotels offer pickup services for ¥100-150

CET Insider Tip: Based on our frequent trips to Luoyang, we actually recommend taking the high-speed rail from Xi'an or Zhengzhou over flying – it's more reliable, takes you directly to the city center, and offers better value.

Luoyang Railway: High-Speed & Regular Trains

Luoyang's railway system is the most convenient way to reach the city from major destinations.

High-Speed Rail Stations:

Luoyang Longmen Station (our recommended arrival point):

  • Modern station located 10km south of city center, near Longmen Grottoes
  • G-series trains (high-speed) from:

    ◦ Xi'an: 1.5-2 hours, ¥174.5 (second class)

    ◦ Zhengzhou: 40 minutes, ¥69.5

    ◦ Beijing: 4-4.5 hours, ¥434.5

    ◦ Shanghai: 6-7 hours, ¥524.5

Luoyang Station (central):

  • Both high-speed and regular trains
  • More convenient for downtown hotels
  • Slightly fewer train frequencies than Longmen Station

Booking Tips:

  • Book through Trip.com or 12306.cn (official railway website)
  • Purchase tickets 15-30 days in advance during peak seasons (April-May, October)
  • Passport required for ticket purchase and boarding

From Station to City:

  • Metro Line 2 connects Longmen Station to downtown (¥2-4)
  • Taxis: ¥30-40 from Longmen Station, ¥15-25 from Luoyang Station
  • Didi typically 10-15% cheaper than regular taxis

Long-Distance Buses & Road Travel

While we generally recommend trains for comfort and reliability, long-distance buses serve smaller cities without rail connections.

Luoyang Bus Stations:

  • Luoyang Central Bus Station: Located near Luoyang Railway Station
  • Jinyuan Bus Station: Services to surrounding counties and Shaolin Temple

Popular Routes:

  • To Dengfeng/Shaolin Temple: ¥25-30, 2 hours, buses every 30 minutes
  • To Sanmenxia: ¥45, 2.5 hours
  • To Yuntai Mountain: ¥60-80, 3 hours (seasonal)

Important Note: We don't recommend long-distance buses for international travelers due to limited English signage and irregular schedules. For trips to Shaolin Temple, consider booking a CET private tour for convenience.

Getting Around Luoyang City

Metro System (Expanding):

Luoyang's metro system is relatively new and expanding. Currently operational:

  • Line 1: East-West line connecting major districts
  • Line 2: North-South line (opened 2021), connecting Longmen Station to city center
  • Fare: ¥2-5 depending on distance
  • Hours: 6:30 AM - 10:00 PM
  • Payment: WeChat Pay, Alipay, or transportation cards

City Buses:

Extensive network covering all major attractions:

  • Bus #81: Connects Longmen Grottoes to downtown
  • Bus #60: White Horse Temple route
  • Bus #53: Luoyang Museum area
  • Fare: ¥1-2 (exact change or mobile payment required)

  • Starting fare: ¥8 for first 2km, then ¥1.5/km
  • Didi (strongly recommended): Download before arrival, supports English interface
  • Average downtown ride: ¥15-30
  • To Longmen Grottoes: ¥35-50 from city center

Mobile Payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay are essential. Cash is increasingly difficult to use. Set up mobile payments before arrival or ask your hotel for assistance.

CET's Transportation Tips & Recommendations

Based on organizing Luoyang tours since 2008, here's our expert advice:

Best Overall Transportation:

The peony landscape in Luoyang.png

    1. Xi'an to Luoyang: High-speed rail (1.5 hours) – scenic and stress-free

    2. Beijing to Luoyang: G-train if time permits, flight if rushed

    3. Within city: Didi for flexibility, metro for major routes

Cost-Saving Strategies:

  • Book train tickets 2-3 weeks ahead for better availability
  • Use metro over taxis when possible (saves 70%)
  • Consider day passes if taking multiple bus trips (¥10/day)

Peak Times to Avoid:

  • Peony Festival (April): Accommodation and transport fill quickly
  • National Golden Weeks (October 1-7): Triple-check all bookings
  • Morning/evening rush hours (7:30-9:00 AM, 5:30-7:00 PM)

For Non-Chinese Speakers:

  • Screenshot destination names in Chinese characters
  • Use translation apps like Google Translate (download offline maps)
  • Hotel business cards are invaluable for taxi returns
  • Consider booking CET's private transfers for stress-free travel

Senior & Family Travel:

Luoyang is reasonably accessible, but note:

  • Metro stations have elevators
  • Taxis are more comfortable for older travelers
  • Private transfers eliminate navigation stress

Safety & Reliability:

Luoyang's public transportation is very safe. However:

  • Use official taxis or Didi (avoid unmarked cars)
  • Keep valuables secure on crowded buses
  • Verify Didi driver's license plate before entering
