For most international and long-distance travelers, the optimal route is to fly to Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TYN) → take high-speed rail (HSR) to Pingyao. Taiyuan’s airport offers extensive domestic and limited international flights, serving as the primary air gateway to Shanxi province.
From the airport, take the airport shuttle bus or a Didi to Taiyuan South Railway Station (the main HSR hub)—a 40-minute journey costing ¥30–60. From there, HSR trains to Pingyao Ancient City Station run every 20–30 minutes, with a 30–40 minute ride time and fares around ¥28. We find this combo strikes the perfect balance of speed and convenience, avoiding the hassle of long-distance buses.
Pingyao has two distinct train stations, and choosing the right one simplifies your journey dramatically:
Pingyao Ancient City Station: This new HSR train station is actually the recommended access for all travelers. This train station links Pingyao to big cities such as Beijing (4 hours, ¥280), Xi’an (2.5 hours, ¥150), and Taiyuan (30-40 minutes, ¥28). However, this train station is a bit far from Pingyao’s ancient city walls on foot, which takes approximately 10 minutes by taxi or Didida. Always purchase train tickets through their WeChat mini-program or through their 12306 train ticket service (English version available).
Pingyao Railway Station: The older, 1933-built conventional station handles slower, long-distance trains (like the K603). It’s closer to the city walls (2 km) but far less convenient—journeys take 2–3 times longer than HSR, and schedules are less frequent. We only recommend this option if you’re arriving from a city not served by HSR.
For flexibility, long-distance buses or private transport are viable options, though less efficient than HSR. From Taiyuan’s Jiannan Bus Station, buses to Pingyao run hourly (2-hour journey, ¥35), dropping off at Pingyao Bus Station, located close to the North Gate of the ancient city.
Private options like pre-booked cars or Didi charters (¥200–300 from Taiyuan) are ideal for groups or those traveling with luggage. Ride-hailing apps work reliably in Shanxi, and drivers often know to drop travelers at Fengyi Gate —a convenient entry point close to many attractions and the Pingyao International Film Festival venue.
Book HSR tickets 3–5 days in advance during Golden Weeks or weekends—they sell out quickly.
Save your accommodation’s Chinese name and address for drivers; most don’t speak English.
If arriving at Pingyao Ancient City Station, avoid unlicensed touts offering rides—stick to official taxis or Didi.
The ancient city is itself a pedestrian-only territory; walking is the most enjoyable option for exploring the area. Because the ancient city is quite small, the “main” sights, such as Rishengchang Draft Bank or the City Wall, lie within a short walking distance of each other—no more than 20 minutes. A stroll through the cobblestone streets lined with gray tile courtyard houses and lanterns is an essential part of a visit to Pingyao; we always enjoy meandering through the side streets where the residents peg out their washing and play mahjong in peace.
Pack comfortable walking shoes, as cobblestone streets may be irregular and slippery from rain. Light luggage is a must, as you will need to carry it through winding streets to your courtyard hotel.
Taxis and ride-hailing are essential for trips between the train stations and the city walls, but they can’t enter the ancient city itself.
Taxis: Green and blue metered taxis have a flag fall of ¥8 (first 3 km), with ¥2/km for additional distance. A ride from Pingyao Ancient City Station to any city gate costs ¥15–20.
Ride-Hailing (Didi): We strongly recommend Didi for price transparency and ease. The app’s English interface lets you set your destination via map, avoiding language barriers. Fares are similar to taxis, and drivers are familiar with all city gates—just specify which gate you prefer (Fengyi Gate is a popular choice for events and central access).
These small, eco-friendly carts are the primary motorized transport inside and just outside the city walls. They’re perfect for tired travelers, those with luggage, or anyone wanting to cover longer distances between gates.
Fares are ¥10–20 per person per trip (or ¥30–50 for a private cart for 1–4 people). Carts operate between all major gates and key attractions, but they can’t access the narrowest lanes. Always confirm the price with the driver before boarding—government regulations cap these fares, so there’s no need for bargaining.
Public Bus: Local bus Route 1 connects Pingyao Railway Station, Pingyao Ancient City Station, and the city perimeter. It’s cheap (¥2) but infrequent and rarely needed—taxis/Didi are more convenient for tourists.
Bicycles: Renting a bike (¥20/day) is a delightful way to explore the city walls or nearby areas like Shuanglin Temple. Most courtyard inns offer rentals, and designated bike parking areas are available at all city gates.
