In this section, we’ll reveal exactly how to get to Sanya and get around, and we’ve dug up the latest information on the ground to ensure you have the best experience possible.
All international and domestic flights land here. The airport is modern and relatively compact, about 15 km west of downtown Sanya (Sanya Bay area).
Your best transfer options the moment you land:
Taxi: Head to the official taxi queue outside Arrivals. A trip to Sanya Bay costs about 40 CNY, to Dadonghai 50-60 CNY, and to Yalong Bay 80-100 CNY. Always ensure the meter is running.
Latest Airport Shuttle Buses: This is a fantastic new development. Two official, comfortable shuttle lines now connect directly to the main resort bays:
Airport Shuttle Line: Direct to Yalong Bay. The fare is 25 CNY.
Airport Shuttle Line: Direct to Haitang Bay and the massive Haitang Bay Duty-Free City. Also 25 CNY. Perfect for shoppers or those staying in Haitang's luxury resorts.
Public Bus: The updated Bus No. 8 is your most useful route from the airport. It travels along Sanya Bay Road through downtown to Yuya Reservoir. For Dadonghai, take the airport shuttle to the “City Terminal” and transfer to local buses like No. 10 or 15.
Arriving by high-speed rail is a scenic alternative, especially from Haikou. Sanya Station is in the city's northwest. From here, take a taxi (around 30 CNY to downtown) or public bus. Key bus connections include Bus 10 to Dadonghai and Bus 22 to Nanshan Temple.
Pro Tip: During the busy Chinese Spring Festival period, special express tourist bus routes (166, 186, 188, 198) are activated. They connect the main stations with the most scenic spots. Ask at the station information desk for more information.
Forget confusing maps. Here’s how we get around Sanya with our clients.
Sanya’s bus system is excellent for the budget-savvy traveler. It’s air-conditioned and most signs have pinyin.
Bus 102: This route is a workhorse. It replaced the old No. 2 bus. We took it from Chenshi Xueyuan to Hongsha Matou (Red Sand Wharf) for a fishing village visit. It connects the west, downtown, and goes east to Haiyun Road.
Key Scenic Routes:
Bus 15: Links downtown Sanya to Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Tourism Zone.
Bus 22: Runs from Sanya Station past Nanshan to Yalong Bay.
Bus 10 & 16: Perfect for looping around Dadonghai and connecting to downtown.
Fares are typically 2 CNY for regular routes, up to 5-15 CNY for longer routes to Nanshan or Yalong Bay. Have small change ready or use WeChat/Alipay on board.
Don’t miss this. It’s a double-decker, roofless (but shaded), air-conditioned bus that runs along the stunning coastal road from Yalong Bay to Tianya Haijiao (End of the Earth).
Fare: A flat 10 CNY per ride. Incredible value.
Journey: The full 70-minute ride is a sightseeing tour itself.
Frequency: Every 30 minutes from 6:00 to 18:00.
Hop on and off at beaches, parks, and viewpoints. We use this often for first-time clients.
Taxis are plentiful. Ride-hailing apps like Didi Chuxing (available in English) are reliable and often cheaper. Always get a digital receipt for clarity. A short trip within the Bay Area costs 10-20 CNY.
Important Note on Pedicabs/Tricycles: Most pedicabs operating in tourist areas like Dadonghai are illegal and unregulated. Sanya traffic police are actively cracking down on them. They often overcharge and can be unsafe. We strongly advise using official taxis or ride-hailing apps instead.
Renting a car or an electric open-top car is popular here.
Open-Top Cars: You can rent these along Sanya Bay's Binghai Blvd. Perfect for a short, scenic 30-minute cruise along the palm-tree-lined coast. Our tip: Drive from east to west in the late afternoon for the best light.
Full Car Rental: Ideal for families or exploring distant spots like Wuzhizhou Island's port or the rainforests. The main rental companies are at the airport. Remember: an International Driving Permit is required alongside your home license.
Seafood Stop: If you drive west along Binghai Boulevard towards the airport, you’ll pass some great, authentic local seafood restaurants right by the fishing ports.
