Shenyang Station (沈阳站): Located at the intersection of Heping and Shenhe Districts. Handles conventional trains to regional destinations within Liaoning Province: Dalian (4 hours), Dandong (2 hours 30 minutes), Jinzhou (2 hours). Also serves some long-distance routes to Harbin and Changchun.

Shenyang North Station (沈阳北站): Situated in Shenhe District near the border with Huanggu District. The city's primary high-speed rail hub. Connections include:
  • Beijing (3 hours 50 minutes, 25+ daily departures)
  • Harbin (2 hours 20 minutes)
  • Dalian (1 hour 50 minutes via high-speed)
  • Shanghai (7 hours via high-speed, limited service)

Shenyang South Station (沈阳南站): It is in Hunnan District on Xinyunhe Road. It opened in 2015. It is a newer station. It has high‑speed trains to Beijing, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao. It also connects to Shanghai through the Beijing‑Shanghai high‑speed line.

Metro Line 1 connects all three stations. The trip from Shenyang Station to North Station takes 7 minutes. It has 3 stops. The trip from North Station to South Station takes 22 minutes. It has 11 stops.

By Long-Distance Bus

Long‑distance buses go to small cities and towns. Trains do not reach these places. There are three main bus stations in Shenyang.

Shenyang General Long-Distance Bus Station (沈阳客运总站): Chongshan Road, Huanggu District. Serves routes to cities throughout Liaoning Province and neighboring Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces.

Shenyang South Long-Distance Bus Station: Shengli South Street, Heping District. Handles routes south toward Dalian and Dandong.

Shenyang West Long-Distance Bus Station: Zhonggong South Street, Tiexi District. Services routes west to Jinzhou and Inner Mongolia.

Buses usually cost 30% to 50% less than trains. But they take much longer. A bus to Dalian costs 80 to 100 CNY. A high‑speed train costs 115 to 145 CNY. The bus takes 4.5 hours. The train takes under 2 hours.

Metro System

As of 2026, Shenyang's metro system has expanded to 7 operational lines (Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 10), covering the city efficiently.

Key Lines for Tourists:

Line 1 (Red): East-west route through central Shenyang. Connects Shenyang Station, Zhongjie (shopping), Taiyuan Street (shopping), and North Station. Critical for accessing most tourist areas.

Line 2 (Yellow): North-south route. Connects Airport, Olympic Sports Center, Shifu Square (city government area), Shenyang North Station, and continues north. Essential for airport transfers.

Line 9 (Purple): Newer line serving western districts and connecting to transfer stations.

City Buses

There are over 140 bus routes. They cover the whole city. Buses run from about 5:30am to 10pm. There are fewer buses after 8pm.

The standard price is 1 CNY for each ride. It does not change with distance. Use exact change when you get on the bus. Drivers do not give change. You can also use a transportation card.

Bus announcements are only in Chinese. Download the Baidu Maps app. It has an English version. You can track bus routes and stops in real time.

Useful routes for tourists:
  • Route 118: Connects Imperial Palace area to North Station
  • Route 222: Links Zhongjie shopping area to Beiling Park (North Tomb)
  • Route 148: Runs from downtown to Dongling Park (East Tomb)

Taxis

Shenyang taxi on urban street.jpg

Shenyang has more than 19,000 legal taxis. Common car brands are Jetta, Santana and Zhonghua.

Sample Taxi Costs:
  • Airport to downtown hotels (20 km): 60–90 CNY
  • Shenyang Station to the Imperial Palace (4 km): 12–15 CNY
  • North Station to Zhongjie (5 km): 14–17 CNY
  • Downtown hotel to North Tomb (8 km): 22 to 26 CNY

Very few drivers speak English. Have your destination written in Chinese characters or show the driver your hotel business card.

Guide Alex's insider tip: Use DiDi if you can. DiDi is like Uber in China. Do not just stop a taxi on the street. The app shows the price first. It tracks the route. It also helps with language problems. Download DiDi before you come to China. You need a Chinese phone number to use the app.

Ride-Hailing Apps

DiDi (滴滴出行): Dominant ride-hailing platform. Offers several service tiers:
  • DiDi Express (快车): Standard service, cheapest option
  • DiDi Premier (优享): Nicer vehicles, slightly higher cost
  • DiDi Taxi (出租车): Hails licensed taxis through the app

Typical DiDi Express fares run 5% to 15% cheaper than metered taxis. Payment via WeChat Pay, Alipay, or international credit card (limited availability).

Practical Transportation Tips

Language Barrier Solutions:
  • Screenshot your destination in Chinese characters before departing
  • Carry your hotel business card at all times
  • Download offline maps (Baidu Maps or Maps.me with China map pack)
  • Learn basic phrases: "Qing qu..." (请去... - Please go to...) followed by your destination

Avoid Rush Hour: Metro and bus services become extremely crowded. This happens between 7:30 am and 9:00 am. It also happens between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm. This is on weekdays. Taxis become scarce and traffic slows significantly during these periods.

Weather considerations:
January to March: Temperatures drop to between -10°C and -20°C. Taxis take time to warm up. Buses can be late. The metro is the most dependable choice.

July through August: Temperatures exceed 30°C. Air-conditioned metro beats hot buses. Taxis charge the same whether air conditioning runs or not.

Payment Methods:
  • Metro: Cash or transportation card
  • Buses: Exact change (1 CNY coins) or transportation card
  • Taxis: Cash only (most drivers)
  • DiDi: WeChat Pay, Alipay, limited international cards

Safety: Shenyang's public transportation is safe. Keep bags and valuables in front of you on crowded metro trains. Licensed taxis are reliable; avoid unlicensed "black taxis" (黑车) that approach tourists at stations.

Shenyang has significantly modernized its transportation infrastructure since 2015. The metro system now rivals Beijing and Shanghai in coverage and cleanliness. It also maintains lower fares. High-speed rail connections make day trips to Dalian, Harbin and Beijing practical. You can make sense of the rail network in Shenyang by understanding which station and line serves your specific needs. This will transform the city from being confusing to being navigable.
