Many first-time travellers encounter avoidable difficulties simply because they overlook critical pre-arrival steps. These are the tasks that cannot wait until arrival. Complete them at home or you will spend your first day in Shenzhen recovering from avoidable mistakes.
Shenzhen runs on WeChat Pay and Alipay. Over 95% of vendors, including street food stalls, metro machines, convenience stores, and taxis, accept QR code payments. Many small vendors no longer accept cash at all. Both apps now allow foreigners to link international Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, or Discover cards directly, with no Chinese bank account required. The setup process requires passport verification and takes roughly ten minutes. Complete it before you travel, then make a small test purchase at home to confirm the card link is active.
A transaction fee of approximately 3% applies to purchases above CNY 200. For large purchases, use a debit card with no foreign transaction fees to minimise costs.
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, and many Western websites are blocked in mainland China. You need a VPN to use them. VPN websites are also blocked in China. You cannot download or buy a VPN after you arrive. Install and test at least one VPN before you cross the border. Astrill works well for long trips. ExpressVPN works for short trips. It has been less stable since 2025. Use OpenVPN mode before you enter China. Install two VPNs as backup.
One important caveat: turn your VPN off when using WeChat Pay, Alipay, or any banking app. Payment transactions routed through a VPN frequently fail.
Google Maps works badly in mainland China. Download Amap (Gaode Maps). It gives accurate directions, metro routes, and English support. Apple Maps is okay for iPhone users. Download offline maps before you cross the border.
Purchase an international eSIM with unfiltered internet access before departure. These route traffic outside the Great Firewall and remove the need for a VPN entirely for most use cases. Physical prepaid SIM kiosks operate in the arrivals hall at Bao'an Airport (bring your passport), but prices are higher than purchasing in advance online.

The honest assessment: November and early December are the best months to visit. Temperatures sit between 18°C and 25°C, humidity drops to its annual low, skies are clear, and outdoor sightseeing is genuinely comfortable. October is close behind but carries a small typhoon risk in the first half of the month. January and February work well for budget travelers, but the city loses 8 to 10 million temporary residents during the Spring Festival period, closing many restaurants and shops.
Avoid June through August if you are uncomfortable with sustained heat above 30°C, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and the possibility of a typhoon rerouting your plans for two to three days.

Shenzhen Metro operates 17 lines covering 528 stations and about 666 km of track. It connects every major attraction, shopping district, and transport hub in the city. For most visitors, the metro covers 90% of what they need to do.

Payment on metro: WeChat Pay, Alipay, and the Shenzhen Tong card all work at fare gates. Single-trip tickets are available at machines accepting CNY 5, 10, and 20 notes. Fares range from CNY 2 to CNY 14. The Shenzhen Tong card provides up to 35% discount on bus fares.
Didi: This is the standard ride-hailing service. The app accepts international credit cards. For visitors without a Chinese phone number, Didi is accessible through the Alipay mini-program. Fares start at CNY 10 for the first 2 km, then CNY 2.6 per km. A night surcharge of 30% applies between 23:00 and 06:00.
Exchange currency at Bank of China branches rather than airport counters. Airport rates are convenient but consistently less favorable. The Bank of China exchanges the following currencies: USD, GBP, EUR, CHF, SGD, SEK, DKK, NOK, JPY, CAD, AUD, PHP, and THB. Counterfeit CNY 100 notes circulate in China including from some ATMs. Check notes carefully before accepting them from any source.
For tax refunds: Spend 500 CNY or more at stores with a "Tax Free" sign. Keep all receipts. Get a tax refund form when you pay. Show it at the airport customs counter after security.

Spring Festival (Chinese New Year, January or February): The city empties dramatically. Most small restaurants, local shops, and services operated by migrant workers close for one to three weeks. Major hotels, malls, and tourist attractions remain open, but the atmosphere is quieter than at any other point in the year. This is the least suitable time for food exploration or a full Shenzhen experience.
Litchi Festival (June to July): The Nanshan Litchi Orchard covers 1.3 million square meters and contains more than 260,000 litchi trees, of which over 600 are more than 100 years old. During the harvest season, visitors enter the orchard and eat directly from the trees. The produce from these aged trees is notably distinct from commercially grown litchi. The orchard fills quickly on weekends.
Christmas (late December): Shenzhen celebrates Christmas more than most Chinese cities. Malls, bars, and public squares have evening events. COCO Park and Shekou Seaworld are the most lively places.
