Shenyang, the capital of China's Liaoning Province, is located 800 kilometres northeast of Beijing. Home to the Qing Dynasty's secondary palace and two UNESCO-recognised imperial tombs, this city of 6.7 million serves as Manchuria's historical heart. You will need two to three full days to properly cover the core sites, with spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offering the most comfortable weather for touring.
I still remember guiding a retired diplomat from London last October. He spent the entire first morning walking the Imperial Palace grounds, taking notes on architectural details most tourists miss. By day three, he told me Shenyang surprised him more than any Chinese city he'd visited, precisely because he'd arrived with zero expectations. That's the truth about this place: it delivers substance over flash.
Shenyang Taoxian International Airport handles over 40 domestic routes and a growing list of international connections. The airport sits 20 kilometers south of downtown. The airport now connects to 18 cities in 12 countries, with multilingual services available in Chinese, English, Korean, and Russian.
Airport to City Center Options
| Transport Method | Duration | Cost (CNY) | Best For |
| Airport Express Bus | 45 to 60 minutes | 15 | Budget travelers with time |
| Taxi (metered) | 30 to 40 minutes | 60 to 80 | Groups of 3 or 4 people |
| DiDi (ride app) | 30 to 40 minutes | 50 to 70 | Solo travelers who want ease |
| Hotel Shuttle | 50 minutes | Free to 30 | Guests at major hotels |
Guide Alex's Insider Tip: Book your DiDi before you clear customs. The airport WiFi works fine, and you'll avoid the taxi queue chaos during peak hours (8am to 10am, 5pm to 7pm).
Rail travelers have three major stations: Shenyang Station (central), Shenyang North Station (high-speed trains), and Shenyang South Station (newer high-speed hub). The Beijing to Shenyang high-speed route takes 3 hours 50 minutes, with 25 daily departures.
Shenyang Metro operates an extensive network covering the city, with Lines 1, 2, and 4 being the most useful for tourists.
Metro Passes Worth Buying
| Pass Type | Validity | Price | When It Makes Sense |
| Single Journey | One trip | 2 to 7 CNY | Testing the system |
| Day Pass | 24 hours | 20 CNY | Hitting 4+ sites in one day |
| Three Day Pass | 72 hours | 50 CNY | Focused sightseeing trip |
| Shenyang Pass (rechargeable card) | Permanent | 20 deposit + credit | Stays longer than 4 days |
Line 2 connects Shenyang Imperial Palace (Huaizhong Square Station) with the North Tomb (Beiling Park Station). This single route covers your two biggest must-see sites.
Taxis run on meters starting at 8 CNY for the first 3 kilometers. Add 2.4 CNY per kilometer after that. Language barriers exist. I tell my clients to keep hotel business cards and screenshot destination names in Chinese.

The Shenyang Imperial Palace covers 60,000 square meters with 114 buildings across three main sections. You walk through 300 rooms if you take the full route.
Standard tickets cost 60 CNY (April to October) and 50 CNY (November to March). The palace opens at 9:00am and closes at 4:30pm (last entry at 3:45pm). Most Western visitors spend 90 minutes here. That's barely enough. Block three hours if you want to read the exhibit descriptions and understand what you're seeing.
The East Route preserves the original Manchu palace layout from 1625. The Middle Route shows the ceremonial halls. The West Route displays Qing artifacts and imperial collections.
Guide Alex's Insider Tip: Hire an English-speaking guide at the entrance for 200 CNY (2-hour tour). The signage explains basic facts, but guides reveal the political intrigue and architectural symbolism that makes this place historically significant. Worth every yuan.
Zhaoling, or the North Tomb, covers an area of 450 hectares, with the Beiling Park being the setting. Emperor Huang Taiji and his wife, Borjigit, are laid to rest here. Construction of the tomb took 8 years, finishing in 1643.
Entrance fees are at 50 CNY. Visit the place at the earliest time possible, from 7am to 9am, where locals practice tai chi.
Fuling (East Tomb) holds Nurhaci, the Qing Dynasty founder. Smaller than Zhaoling but less crowded. The tree-lined approach stretches 1.2 kilometers. Many visitors skip this one. They're wrong to do so. The architecture tells you how Manchu burial customs evolved before and after the Beijing conquest.

Shenyang cuisine leans savory and hearty. Forget delicate Jiangnan flavors. This is northeastern comfort food built for harsh winters.
Laobian Dumplings on Zhongjie Lu serves the city's most famous jiaozi. The pork and chive filling uses a soup-stock way of cooking and it makes each dumpling burst in your mouth. You should go between 11:30am and 1pm for lunch or you will have to wait.
Guide Alex's Insider Tip: Order the sanxian dumplings with pork, shrimp, and sea cucumber. Do not order the more unusual fillings unless you have eaten organ meats since you were young. The sanxian has classic northeastern flavor and it will not be too strong for Western taste.
Xita Korean Street (西塔街) runs through the Korean district. Over 200,000 ethnic Koreans live in Shenyang. The restaurants here serve proper Korean-Chinese fusion: cold noodles, grilled beef, kimchi stews. Jin Dading Restaurant does excellent naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles).
For hotpot, locals swear by Xiabu Xiabu and Haidilao chains. Individual pot sizes let solo travelers eat hotpot without ordering for four people. Prices run 60 to 100 CNY per person.

Money: Major hotels and the Imperial Palace take WeChat Pay and Alipay. Smaller restaurants and taxi drivers prefer cash. ATMs accepting foreign cards cluster around Zhongjie Pedestrian Street.
Language: English proficiency drops to near zero outside luxury hotels. Download Baidu Translate or Google Translate with offline Chinese packs.
Weather: January averages minus 11°C. July hits 30°C with humidity. Pack accordingly. Winter visits mean dealing with genuine Manchurian cold. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures (10°C to 22°C), ideal for walking tours.
Accommodation: Five-star options include Shangri-La, Kempinski, and Marriott, running 600 to 1,200 CNY per night. Mid-range hotels near Shenyang Station cost 200 to 400 CNY. Check that your hotel sits near Metro Line 1 or 2 for easy access to major sites.
Safety: Shenyang is safe. Violent crime against tourists is virtually non-existent. Watch for pickpockets on crowded metro trains during rush hour. Keep valuables in front pockets or bags you can see.
Two days minimum. Three days are comfortable. Five days if you want to explore beyond the historical sites into neighborhoods, markets, and day trip options.
Sample 3 Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive and stay at hotel, visit Imperial Palace (3 hours), walk along Zhongjie Pedestrian Street (1 hour), dinner at Laobian Dumplings.
Day 2: North Tomb and Beiling Park (3 hours), lunch nearby, then visit Liaoning Provincial Museum (2 hours), Korean cuisine for dinner in Xita district.
Day 3: Visit East Tomb (2 hours), Zhang Mansion (the old residence of a warlord) (1.5 hours), then explore Shenyang Financial Museum or shopping for souvenirs, early dinner before departing.
This city rewards travelers who appreciate history over Instagram moments. Come with realistic expectations, block proper time for the major sites, and you'll leave understanding why Manchuria mattered to Chinese imperial history. Most people don't know Shenyang exists. That's their loss and your advantage: fewer crowds, lower prices, and experiences that haven't been packaged to death for mass tourism.
