Beihai GUIDE & TOURS

Beihai Travel Tips

Having organized countless trips to Beihai over the years, we've gleaned invaluable insights that go beyond typical guidebooks. Along the way, we've chatted with local fishermen at dawn, adjusted plans for travelers caught in sudden showers, and discovered hidden gems that only locals know. Today, we're sharing these hard-earned tips to make your Beihai trip not just smooth, but truly unforgettable.

Travel Prep Tips

Beihai has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons. From April to October, it is hot and rainy, and the sun is intense—so be sure to bring high-SPF sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight raincoat. The temperature drops slightly from November to March, but it is still mild; a thin down jacket or thick sweater is sufficient. For those planning to visit the island or engage in water activities, quick-drying clothing, non-slip water shoes, and a waterproof bag for electronic devices are essential to avoid inconvenience caused by water immersion.

From November to March, it's cool but not cold—leave the heavy down jacket at home; a thick sweater or a thin cotton jacket will do. If you're heading to Weizhou Island or planning to snorkel or play by the water, quick-drying clothes and non-slip water shoes are game-changers. The rocks by the shore can be slippery, and regular sneakers get soaked easily. Oh, and a small waterproof pouch for your phone—trust us, you'll want to take photos by the sea, and no one wants a water-damaged phone ruining the mood.

Regarding travel documents, if you plan to take a ferry to Weizhou Island (a must-visit for many travelers to Beihai), remember to book ferry tickets in advance through official channels—especially during peak seasons (May to October and public holidays), tickets sell out quickly. It is also recommended to make copies of your ID card or passport and store them separately from the original documents, or keep electronic versions in your mobile phone for emergency use.

Also, make a copy of your ID card or passport—keep a physical copy in your luggage and a digital one in your phone's notes. It's a small thing, but if you ever misplace your original, having a backup will save you a lot of hassle at the hotel or ferry terminal.

Itinerary Planning

Beihai is not a large city, but the travel time between the urban area and surrounding islands (such as Weizhou Island) is relatively long. We suggest avoiding overcrowded itineraries. If you have 3-4 days, you can arrange 1-2 days in the urban area and 2 days on Weizhou Island. When staying on Weizhou Island, try to avoid moving between accommodations frequently—choose a hotel or homestay with a good location (such as near Crocodile Mountain or Shilongkou) to reduce travel time.

When staying on Weizhou Island, pick one hotel or homestay and stick with it—moving luggage around the island is a hassle, and good homestays usually help arrange island tours or rent electric bikes for you. We love homestays near Crocodile Mountain or Shilongkou—they're close to key spots, so you don't have to spend hours riding around. Last month, a family we took there stayed near Shilongkou and said they loved being able to walk to the beach for sunrise every morning without rushing.

For water activities (such as snorkeling, sea fishing), it is best to arrange them in the morning. At this time, the sea water is clearer, the visibility is high, and the temperature is relatively comfortable, avoiding the sweltering heat at noon. In the afternoon, you can arrange more relaxed activities, such as strolling along the beach or resting in a coastal café.

Afternoons are perfect for slow things: grab a coconut at a beachside stall, stroll along the shore, or sit in a little café with a sea view. We once found a tiny café near Silver Beach with old wooden tables—their coconut jelly is amazing, and you can watch locals walk their dogs on the beach. Those unplanned little moments are what make a trip memorable.

Local Experience Hacks

Beihai is a coastal city with a strong fishing culture. When interacting with local fishermen or participating in fishing experiences, please respect their working habits and follow their guidance—this not only ensures safety but also allows you to better experience the local customs. When purchasing seafood, it is recommended to go to regular seafood markets (such as Beihai Seafood Wholesale Market) and ask for clear prices before buying, or ask the homestay owner to accompany you to avoid being overcharged.

When buying seafood, skip the small stalls near tourist spots—they often overcharge. Head to Beihai Seafood Wholesale Market instead; it's where locals shop. Bring a small scale if you have one (or use your phone's scale app) to avoid being short-changed. And if your homestay offers to cook the seafood for you, take them up on it—they know the best ways to cook local fish and shrimp, way better than most restaurants.

Regarding accommodation, if you prefer a lively environment, you can choose the area near Beihai Silver Beach—there are many restaurants and entertainment facilities nearby. If you pursue tranquility, the area around Weizhou Island's Naddao Village is a good choice, where you can enjoy the quiet of the island and the beauty of the sunset. No matter which area you choose, it is recommended to book in advance during peak seasons and confirm the check-in policy and free services (such as pick-up and drop-off) with the hotel or homestay in advance.

If you're here to relax and escape the crowds, Naddao Village on Weizhou Island is our secret spot. The village is quiet, with small lanes lined with bougainvillea, and most homestays have private terraces where you can watch the sunset. We stayed there last spring, and the homestay owner made us fresh mango sticky rice every morning—little touches like that make you feel at home.

No matter where you book, always confirm a few things in advance: Do they offer free pick-up from the ferry terminal? Is breakfast included? And during peak season, book at least 1-2 weeks early—good places fill up fast, and we hate seeing travelers stuck with shoddy accommodation because they waited too long.

Safety Reminders

When participating in water activities, be sure to choose regular operators with complete qualifications and wear safety equipment as required—do not trust unlicensed individual vendors for the sake of cheap prices. The coastal wind is strong in the evening, especially on the island; if you walk along the coast, stay away from the shoreline to avoid danger caused by sudden waves.

Also, be careful with evening walks along the coast, especially on Weizhou Island. The wind picks up after sunset, and waves can suddenly get big—stay a few meters away from the shoreline. We had a group member once get splashed by a big wave and drop his phone into the sea; it's easy to get distracted by the sunset, but safety first.

In terms of health, although Beihai's seafood is fresh, it is not advisable to eat too much at one time, especially for those with weak gastrointestinal functions. It is recommended to pair it with local ginger tea to protect the stomach. When drinking water, choose bottled water or boiled water to avoid drinking unboiled water.

Stick to bottled water or boiled water from your hotel—tap water isn't safe to drink directly, and even a small stomachache can ruin your day.
