Qiandongnan GUIDE & TOURS

Qiandongnan Transportation

A journey to Qiandongnan (Southeast Guizhou) is an excursion into one of China's most culturally rich and beautiful areas, inhabited by members of the Miao and Dong minorities. However, the experience is marked by its breathtaking, mountainous landscapes. Getting to or even comprehending local customs in such isolated settlements is a matter of careful planning. As experienced travel professionals in Guizhou's mountainous areas, we can tell you that with careful planning, even this becomes part of the experience. This travel guide will provide you with up-to-date, useful information for accessing this lovely part of China.

Getting to the Qiandongnan Region

Your tour usually starts by arriving at a big national hub. Then, you take a last trip into the heart of the prefecture.

Gateway Hub: Arriving in Guiyang

For nearly all travelers, the provincial capital of Guiyang is the essential gateway. It is well-connected nationally via Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (KWE) and, more importantly, serves as a major high-speed rail (HSR) hub. Modern bullet trains connect Guiyang efficiently to Guilin, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, and other key cities across China. Your first task is to get to Guiyang; from there, you'll make your way southeast into Qiandongnan.

The Final Leg to Qiandongnan (From Guiyang)

On arrival in Guiyang, there are many ways to proceed to the regional center of Kaili or other locations. However, we highly recommend the following, decidedly more modern approach:

High Speed Train(Recommended & Fastest): The game-changer in transport in China. The Guiyang-Kaili HSR whisks you from Guiyang North Station to Kaili South Station in just 30-40 minutes. You’ll then take a quick taxi ride to your downtown location.

Long-Distance Bus (More Economical Options): The time taken for long-distance buses operating from Guiyang’s main terminals (such as the East Bus Station) to Kaili is 2.5 to 3 hours. These are more economical but rely on road traffic and are less comfortable compared to HSR services.

Private Transfer or Tour (For Flexibility): Groups or persons wanting to proceed from the Guiyang airport to a village directly would require the use of a private vehicle. We always make plans for this because it saves the most time.

Other Air Access

Smaller airports like Tongren Fenghuang Airport or Liping Airport serve the periphery of the prefecture. While they can be convenient for very specific itineraries (e.g., starting in Tongren for Fanjing Mountain), flight schedules are limited. For most, Guiyang remains the most flexible and reliable point of entry.

Getting Around Within Qiandongnan

This is where your adventure truly begins. The region's beauty is in its dispersed villages, and navigating between them requires a local strategy.

The Regional Hub: Kaili

Consider Kaili your essential basecamp. It's the prefecture's capital, with the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and transport links. Almost all journeys to the famous villages start from here. We always recommend spending your first night in Kaili to get your bearings before venturing deeper into the countryside.

Local Buses & Minivans

Public buses and shared minivans are the lifelines connecting Kaili to villages like Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, Zhaoxing Dong Village, Langde, and Basha. They are affordable and offer an authentic local experience. However, be prepared: departures can be infrequent, schedules are fluid, vehicles are basic, and journeys are slow on winding mountain roads. This option is best for the ultra-budget traveler with plenty of time and patience.

Private Car with Driver (Highly Recommended)

The View of Qiandongnan.jpg

For most visitors, hiring a private car with a local driver is the single best investment for exploring Qiandongnan. The benefits are immense:

Flexibility: Create your own schedule, stop for photos, and visit multiple villages in one day.

Time-Saving: Drastically reduces travel time compared to public transport.

Comfort & Safety: A reliable vehicle and a driver familiar with the mountain roads.

Local Insight: Drivers often share knowledge about the villages and customs.

You can arrange this service through your hotel in Kaili, a local travel agency, or as part of a pre-planned tour.

Realistic Expectations & Pro-Tips

Travel Times: In our experience, though the roads are greatly improved, one must be flexible in scheduling when traveling in the mountains. What may seem like a short route can take an hour or more to traverse.

Road Conditions: Roads in Qiandongnan are paved, mainly consisting of constantly curving and undulating terrain. If you have motion sickness, prepare the necessary medication.

Digital Tools: For navigation, use Amap or Baidu Maps. Ride-hailing services like Didi are available in Kaili city, but not between villages. Download offline maps.

A tour to the eternal villages of Qiandongnan is well worth all the planning. Just think of the great cultural and visual sights you will enjoy as you take advantage of the most modern trains in combination with clever regional transportation solutions. Leave the planning in our hands; take a look at our customized itineraries or let us design a smooth trip to the interior of China's minority regions.
